FOUNTAIN HILLS AZ - After much discussion earlier this year, motorized skateboards and scooters will now be the subject of public scrutiny in Fountain Hills.

Public forums will be held this week to gauge residents' opinions on a possible ban against the play vehicles, in advance of a decision by the Fountain Hills Town Council.

The town's first public forum will be held at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Fountain Hills Community Center, 13001 N. La Montana Drive.

A second meeting will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday.

The Town Council decided May 5 to wait before considering an official ban on motorized play vehicles.

The council voted 6-1 to direct the town's volunteer Public Safety Commission to organize a public forum to gather feedback on the motorized scooter issue. Vice Mayor Kathleen Nicola, who died in a Lake Powell boating accident in May, was the only council member who opposed.

According to officials, discrepancies with Fountain Hills' codes regarding motorized scooters make enforcement difficult.

At the May meeting, Maricopa County Sheriff's Office Lt. John D'Amico cited a report that found most calls to the Fountain Hills substation regarding motorized scooters are related to noise rather than safety.

After public feedback is gathered on the issue, the Public Safety Commission will report back to the Town Council.

"We look forward to hearing the voices and opinions of the public on this issue so that we can provide the council with the information they requested," said Chairman Larry Moyse.
